"Impressive...wow! The prolific, fertile mind of Kevin Piastra doesn't disappoint. This kid was only 16 when this was released! (It was culled from performances from 2009 to 2010, including his first time onstage!) He had only been onstage doing standup 4 or 5 times before making the CD, and look at how great he is already! A natural, a comedy prodigy for sure.
I went to a show he was part of once, definitely comes across better in person--stand-up is meant to be a live performance, it is a very elusive art form that people have yet to be able to document properly. A painting mostly looks the same in a photo, the music sounds pretty much the same on an album, but COMEDY on an album? NOPE!
The title is funny... and accurate, in the sense that there is no real structured flow in his set and this was not a recording made all in one venue. It's a collection of excerpts from 3 different performances on 3 different nights in 3 different locations. Interesting to hear the hair bit and that crucifix joke told differently, we get a super-quick glimpse into the evolution of an act. Not to mention I think it's wonderful that the majority of his material is clean.
Love the title and the cover photo, sitting behind a photoshopped star on the Hollywood walk of fame (but the picture really was taken there.) Less than half of the performance on this disc was actually done in the world-famous LA Hollywood Improv, the irony is this has got to be one of the smartest, funniest, raw shows ever to be indie-produced outside of the Hollywood record system. Then, with "Mental Spewage 2.0", the extended version of the original, we really get a treat.
Whenever I can, I try to keep up with his latest zany videos on www.youtube.com/frostychickenprods www.funnyordie.com/kevinpiastra
Also, my family and I love reading his wacky one-liners on his twitter feed: www.twitter.com/kevinpiastra
I hope his hiatus is almost over. Anyway, last time I saw him do stand-up was here: www.youtube.com/watch?v=DOCgfYrZAME
Keep a sharp eye (ouch!) out for this guy soon.
